Traveling Alumni

John Nosek who traveled the scenic Hudson Valley in New York State,

Tom & Janice Hola who took a long weekend of R&R in New Jersey,

Bill & Amy Roman Kostka who rode six scenic railroads & visited Pike’s Peak in Colorado,

Susan Said & Gail Russler Meyer who enjoyed a one-day trip to Put-in-Bay, and again,

Barry & Gail Russler Meyer who visited a bit of PA and Washington, DC, where they attended a Nationals baseball game and Barry, for his hobby, visited his 50th different Major League Baseball Stadium (30 “current” stadiums + 20 “old” stadiums no longer in use).

 

Thinking Of………

Millie Gerak, who is recuperating from surgery performed July 28, 2008, and,

Rhea Jones, who has welcomed her mom, Albina Jones, to her home in Montana;

we hear that Rhea may be on her way to China soon!

 

Bulldog Kudos Go To……

Chris Zayd Dolce’s daughter, Jessica, upon her poem, “Weeping Willow” which was exhibited in the American Greetings’ Fine Arts Show at Spaces Gallery, downtown Cleveland, July 25 thru August 8, 2008.

Linda Reed Strauss, who became a great-aunt August 6th with the birth of her niece’s son, Brody Reed Pittner,

and to, former faculty member, Dennis Blue, who again became a “Grandpa” at the birth of Huntley Anne Blue, born July 23rd in Colorado, to his son and family.

Ken & Kathy (Schneider) Nowack who vacationed on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and,

Ken Dankowski who was deployed by FEMA to Indiana to work the flooding throughout the state.

               5 wines + light appetizers, lots of mingling;

BULLDOG FOLLOW-UP:

 

Congratulations to Leslie Mroz Readinger and her “Team Leslie” who walked (with a walker) for MS April 26th!  They increased their contribution from last year by raising a few dollars shy of $3,000 for the Ohio MS Chapter.  Kudos, Leslie & Team!

 

 

IT’S A SMALL WORLD

 

This spring, Dan Mihalik’s daughter-in-law, Kim Mihalik, directed “Steel Magnolias” for the Spotlights Community Theater in Broadview Heights, the same group in which Audrey Sopko devotes her time.  To Kim’s credit, the show was met with rave reviews and sell-out crowds!

Valerie Schwonek - who marries Terry Blazey, a 1966 graduate of GHHS, June 7, 2008!

 

Leslie Mroz Readinger - diagnosed with MS in 2002, (and who broke her hip right before our 40th Reunion!) is walking for MS April 26th!  Last year she did the same and raised over $2,000 for the Ohio MS Chapter.  Any contributions to MS would be appreciated to fund programs and research in order to battle this disease!

 

 

TRYING SOMETHING NEW

 

Estelle Angyal Hofer, Linda Capretta, Ken Zach and Jerry Celebucki tried their hands at brewing beer!!  The ingredients are mixed, it’s fermenting, and in a month they’ll taste their efforts!!

 

And for all you runners out there…take note that the Rite-Aid Cleveland Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, May 18th.  This year’s event includes the Marathon, a 10K, a Half Marathon, the MetroHealth Wheelchair challenge and a Kids’ Run.  To sign up for the event, visit their website, www.clevelandmarathon.com.     Hey Ernie Chizmar ----------- maybe a trip to Cleveland to  participate?

Sharon Travagliante Weitzman, with husband, Paul, traveling in the next few months to Florida and to Hemet, CA, to visit their son and grandchildren.

 

Interested in cruising to Bermuda?  Cindy Garsig Jeric of the GHHS Class of 1960 and Buckeye Beeline Travel have put together the first cruise vacation inviting all GHHS Classmates of any GHHS Class. They, their families and friends, can board the Norwegian Majesty of the Norwegian Cruise Line and enjoy a 7-day cruise, Saturday, June 28 through Saturday, July 5, 2008.  Refer to their brochure on our “Bulletin Board” page of this website.  Bon voyage!!

 

Those Recovering from Illness & Surgery

 

Estelle Angyal Hofer’s young granddaughter, Briana Nicole, from illness, and,

 Carol Stolarski’s mother who recovers from a hip replacement .

 

 

BULLDOG KUDOS TO:

 

Dewey & JoAnn Smith  - who recently moved to the State of Florida; and,

 

Linda Reed Strauss – for saving a canine suffering from severe malnutrition and hypothermia as a product of being “dumped” along a roadside that Linda travels to work.  With a temperature so low it didn’t register on a thermometer, an irregular heartbeat, and low blood sugar, Linda raced this dog to the East Bay SPCA Vet Clinic in Oakland, CA, where their staff took over.  Miraculously, “Bart” is responding to treatment and after four days is able to stand on his own.  While he has a way to go, it is hoped that he will now find a happy home and be able to enjoy a long & happy life!

Those Recovering from Illness & Surgery:

 Valerie Schwonek; Pam Poveroni Conrad’s husband, Joe; Sharon Travagliante Weitzman and Gail Russler Meyer’s husband, Barry, and Leslie Mroz Readinger  both recovering from broken hips!  Also in a state of recovery is one of our former faculty members, Dennis Blue, who is now being held together by a titanium plate and eight screws since breaking his right ankle!

Patty Scaravilli -  A student from Patty’s FIRST, third-grade class at Roosevelt, posted a query at the Guestbook page of our website, asking how to reach her as she felt Patty truly inspired her!  This says a lot about Patty as a teacher….congrats!

 

Chuck Pflueger -  Who just became Director of Marketing for Standard Renewable Energy, Houston, TX

 

And a belated Congrats! to Lynne Szaraz Schenkelberg who retired from her place of employment right before our 40th Reunion!

 

OUR CONDOLENCES TO: 

Ken & Kathy Schneider Nowack – Ken’s father passed away in January.

To the Family of Emily Oberaitis Budi, who passed away February 15, 2008.

 

 

Octoberfest October 12th was a fun event!

Some of our group began the evening with dinner at Mapleside Farms restaurant, a stone’s throw from the Skyview Lodge where the rest of the festivities were taking place.  It was great seeing alum, Al Juriga, whose band Heartbeat played during the evening, and allowed us the opportunity to dance!  Tables were reserved for the Class of ’67, and with a hayride where you could view all those glorious stars, and bonfire, not only was a good time had by all, but those alumni who attended also contributed a total of $81.00 towards our scholarship fund!

The 40th Reunion was a great success and everyone had a wonderful time at both the Pizza Party on Friday, August 3rd, and the Banquet on Saturday, August 4th. 

Our hats are off to the committee and many thanks to our Chairperson, Gail Russler Meyer and Co-chair, Audrey Sopko.
